Plan B Mindset: Always have a backup plan ready for unexpected changes like redundancy. Make sure you're prepared so that you’re not caught off guard.
Love Your Job While Planning Ahead: Appreciate your current role but remain proactive in exploring other opportunities before dissatisfaction sets in.
Be Ready for Voluntary Redundancy: If the chance for voluntary redundancy arises, evaluate it as an opportunity for growth and change, rather than a setback.
Go Where Opportunities Are: Sometimes new prospects require bold moves. Consider relocation if it means accessing better career paths.
Acknowledge the Emotional Impact: Understand that feelings of grief, frustration, and loss are natural, but they should not prevent you from moving forward.
Understand the Realities of Restructuring: Recognise that organisational changes are strategic, not personal. During restructures people often fall into the categories of thriving, enduring, or exited.
Embrace Growth Through Change: Use redundancy as a springboard for personal development, pushing beyond comfort zones to discover new strengths.
Never Lose, Only Learn: View setbacks as powerful learning experiences: reflect, adapt, and share your insights with others who may benefit.
See Redundancy as a Chapter, Not the Story: Understand that redundancy is just one part of your career journey; it doesn’t define your value or your future.
The Last Word
Redundancy will never be a barrel of laughs. Whether you’re excited by change or alarmed, a change is always a gamble. When you’re working alongside other people, you will feel their worries. You will be anxious for a positive outcome both for them and for yourself. Once the upheaval is over, there will be a period of adjustment. There will be opportunities for reflection and scrutiny with hindsight. But you are not your redundancy. It’s just a chapter in your story.
