Hello KSKOers
Welcome to this episode of The Knowing Self Knowing Others podcast. In this episode, I talk to whose specialism is career storytelling. Ricardo shares practical tips like career timelines, retrospectives, and personalised CVs. We talk about how passion shapes our identities, and the struggles with burnout and separating self-worth from work. Whether you’re shifting careers or seeking self-awareness, this episode is full of insights to help you grow and succeed!

Here are five actionable takeaways from the episode to help you develop your self-aware leadership skills:
1. Practice Feedforward Exercises: Instead of dwelling on past mistakes, focus on what you can do differently in the future. Seek out constructive feedback from colleagues, mentors, or coaches to identify things you should do more of, less of and do differently next time.
2. Develop Your Career Story: Craft a compelling narrative of your professional journey. Map out your career timeline, significant achievements and lessons learned. Tailor these stories to highlight your strengths and align them with your career goals, much like Ricardo’s toolkit advises you to do.
3. Conduct Retrospective Analyses: Regularly review past experiences to understand your motivations and identify patterns. This self-reflection can help you pinpoint what drives your professional satisfaction and how you can leverage that for future roles. Just like with other elements of self-awareness, reflecting backwards can help you move forwards.
4. Leverage External Perspectives: Work with mentors, coaches, or trusted peers to gain outside perspectives on your professional identity and blind spots. If you haven’t already heard me talk about my three layer definition of self-awareness, ‘recognition of your impact’ is the second layer, and it’s a critical element of understanding how you are received and perceived by others.
5. Build a Toolkit for Career Planning: Use tools and resources like Ricard’s “Superhero and Superego Exercise,” Motivational Mapping and Career Timeline to explore and define your professional identity. These exercises can help you clarify your career goals and strategically position yourself for growth. Access his toolkit here
