Top Takeaways Tuesday: Inclusive Leadership for Courage, Community, and Change

The Knowing Self Knowing Others Podcast, Ep. 98

Hello KSKOers

In this episode, I’m joined by the brilliant Neil Woodbridge, the energetic and visionary CEO of Thurrock Lifestyle Solutions. Neil’s leadership story is one of courage, co-production, and unwavering belief in the potential of people — both those he supports and those he works alongside. Whether you lead a team, support a community, or simply want to grow as a person, there’s a lot to unpack in this episode.

Looking forward to joining you on your learning journey!

Here are my top takeaways from our conversation:

1. Leadership is stronger when built with, not just for, people
Neil’s model of “experts by experience” is far more than a governance tick-box; it’s a radical approach to shared leadership. At Thurrock Lifestyle Solutions, every board member is a disabled person bringing their lived expertise to strategic decision-making. It’s a vivid reminder that co-production is not just possible, but powerful. By handing over real influence, Neil has built a service that is not only more ethical, but more effective.

2. Humility is a leadership superpower
One of the most striking aspects of Neil’s story is how aware he is of his own impact, and how little ego he brings to the table. He credits his growth to the humility he developed early in his career. Neil constantly reflects on how he can improve, speaks openly about his mistakes, and keeps his focus on impact rather than image. It's a refreshing and honest look at what true leadership can look like.

3. Neurodiversity can fuel innovation when harnessed wisely
Neil identifies as having ADHD, and he’s learned to understand how his neurotype shapes his thinking and energy. Rather than seeing it as a limitation, he’s used it as a leadership tool, bringing big ideas and bold decisions into his organisation. The key, he says, is to balance this energy with a team who can ground him, challenge him, and help refine his vision. It’s a powerful example of turning self-awareness into strategic strength.

4. Wellbeing isn’t a benefit, it’s a business value
At TLS, wellbeing is baked into the culture. From providing counselling and massages to staff, to holding joyful ‘duck races’ and recognition awards, Neil’s team doesn’t treat staff care as a ‘nice to have’, it’s part of how the business succeeds. In a sector prone to burnout, he’s found simple, meaningful ways to support his team and boost morale. This commitment to care extends far beyond clients - and it’s paying off in retention, resilience, and impact.

5. A strengths-based approach changes everything
One of the most inspiring themes in our conversation was how Neil constantly flips the script - from deficit to strength. Instead of asking what people can’t do, TLS asks what people can do. They use tools like ‘head, heart and hands’ to match employees to clients, interests, and roles. They reject labels and assumptions, and build systems that nurture potential. It’s a reminder that positive psychology and person-centred thinking aren’t just buzzwords - they’re the foundation of transformation.

Here are the top five actions that you can take away from this episode to strengthen your self-aware leadership skills:

1. Revisit your early work experiences — and ask what they taught you
Think back to your first job. What leadership styles did you encounter? What did you love, and what did you silently vow never to do? Neil’s early experience with a top-down manager stayed with him, and shaped the inclusive leader he is today. Your past is full of leadership clues. Revisit it with curiosity, and let those memories shape how you show up now.

2. Map your personal working style — and identify what balances you
Do you lead with ideas, energy, strategy, empathy? Do you thrive on detail or drive? Self-awareness starts by recognising your natural tendencies - and then building a team that complements you. Neil surrounds himself with colleagues who slow him down, question assumptions, and keep things grounded. You don’t need to change who you are, just make sure you’re not leading in a vacuum.

3. Build feedback into your leadership rhythm
360 reviews, honest conversations, and even “letters of concern” - Neil’s organisation is rich in feedback culture. He encourages candour as a form of care, not criticism. Think about how you could make feedback a regular, healthy part of your leadership life. Not just once a year. Not just top-down. True feedback loops build trust and foster growth - for everyone involved.

4. Ask yourself: what impact am I really having?
Neil is clear that turnover is vanity, impact is sanity. He’s not interested in flashy figures unless they’re matched by real-world transformation. It’s a question we can all ask ourselves: what difference are we actually making? Are our actions aligned with our values? How do we know? Pausing to assess your impact can realign your direction, re-energise your team, and help you lead more consciously.

5. Write your own ‘head, heart and hands’ profile
This is one of the simplest, most powerful tools Neil uses at TLS. What do you offer from your head (knowledge, skills)? From your heart (passions, values)? From your hands (practical talents, hobbies)? Taking time to articulate these parts of yourself can help you see your own strengths more clearly - and might even uncover ways you’re under-using them at work. It’s also a brilliant tool to use with your team or coaching clients.
