Top Takeaways Tuesday: Unraveling Impostor Syndrome: Self-Doubt and Personal Growth
The Knowing Self Knowing Others Podcast, Ep 73
Hello KSKOers
I had great fun in conversation with the fabulous Adrian Ashton in this episode of The Knowing Self Knowing Others Podcast. We discussed imposter syndrome and debated whether it was simply a part of the human condition. We also talked about producing annual reports on your own work as a way of holding yourself accountable. It that isn’t self-awareness in action, I don’t know what is!!!
Here’s a link to the episode…
Misconceptions of Impostor Syndrome: Adrian and I discuss the misconceptions and risks associated with impostor syndrome. Adrian challenges the idea, suggesting that actually it's more a coping mechanism for burnout rather than a real phenomenon. This prompts reflection on the true nature of impostor syndrome and raises the question of whether it’s a response to societal pressures, a safety mechanism, or a combination of both. We also discuss the weaponisation of imposter syndrome.
Reflection question: When have you felt like an imposter?
Influence and Evolution of Impostor Syndrome: We explore the influence of language and the evolution of the term "impostor syndrome" from its original form as "impostor phenomenon." Our discussion highlights how language and societal dynamics can shape perceptions of psychological experiences. We discuss whether reframing the language around impostor syndrome can impact individuals' attitudes and responses to self-doubt and professional challenges
Reflection question: How is self-doubt and anxiety about not having all of the answers talked about in your organisation?
"I'm coming to the idea that imposter syndrome was never a real thing, and it isn't a real thing… The first person out there is always feeling like a fraud and impostor because they're breaking new ground.”
Self-Reflection and Personal Growth: We emphasise the interconnectedness of human experiences and the importance of acknowledging and respecting these connections in various contexts. Organisations and individuals need to do more to foster a supportive and affirming environment to alleviate feelings of not belonging and imposter syndrome within workplaces and communities. It’s about putting the EDI agenda into practice and really living those values
Reflection question: How were you welcomed in your organisation and do you feel you belong? What about other colleagues?
Honesty and Accountability in Annual Reports: Adrian is an independent consultant and writes annual reports for his business. He emphasises the importance of honesty in his reports, stressing the need to include both the good and bad times. He believes that being transparent inspires trust and help him holds himself accountable. This approach opens the door for self-reflection, allowing people to analyse reasons behind bad performance, acknowledge personal shortcomings, and seek input from others on improvement. This practice can be applied to personal evaluation, encouraging self-awareness of values and beliefs.
Reflection question: What would you write in your individual annual report?
Business Values in Annual Reports: Adrian suggests including business values in annual reports to make them tangible and meaningful to others. By publishing their values, individuals and organisations can uphold themselves to higher standards and demonstrate their commitment to ethical and sustainable practices. Both individuals and businesses need to align their annual reports with their values to create a positive impact and build trust within their communities and industries
Reflection question: What are your values and how would you include them in your annual report?
