“Leadership is not about being in charge. Leadership is about taking care of those in your charge.”
Simon Sinek
The nine core concepts from the article are:
Care is Foundational: Effective leadership starts with genuine care for yourself and the people around you.
Empathy Builds Understanding: Developing empathy is crucial to connecting with other people and leading with compassion.
Respect Underpins Trust: Consistently showing respect fosters trust, credibility, and strong relationships.
Kindness Strengthens Teams: Kindness creates a supportive and collaborative environment where people thrive.
Honest Conversations Matter: Addressing difficult issues with care and respect strengthens leadership integrity.
Wellbeing Sets the Example: Leaders need to model self-care and promote a healthy work-life balance for their teams.
Encourage Open Communication: Building a culture of transparency and dialogue helps teams feel supported and heard.
Balance Policies with People: Relational leadership ensures fairness whilst valuing individual needs and contributions.
Organisations Reflect Care: Organisations need to mirror the care they show to customers in their treatment of employees.
The Last Word
Care is the first direction of the self-aware leadership compass. By embracing empathy, respect, kindness, and honest communication, leaders create environments where people feel valued and supported. Prioritising well-being and fostering open dialogue strengthens teams and organisations. Leadership begins with care, and when leaders model it authentically and with integrity, they inspire others to do the same.
Sssssh! I have a secret to tell you!
In 2025, I’ll be writing my second book! It will focus exclusively on the nine direction of my Self-Aware Leadership Compass.
It’ll focus on each direction and their ‘sub-directions’. Just link a normal 'directional compass’, has north, east, south east, north west, east by south east, west by north west and so on, the same it true for the self-aware leadership compass!
When we think about care - kindness, respect and empathy are all relevant. When we think about authenticity, courage and honesty are inextricably linked.
